On 12 September, the Presidency and the leadership of our Regional Sections and our Networks joined for the new era of our partnership between UCLG & the European Commission.

In the presence of EC Director General for International Partnerships Koen Doens, the European Commission signed framework partnership agreements with five global associations of local authorities:  represented by Anne Hidalgo, Mayor of Paris (France), President of the International Association of French-Speaking Mayors (AIMF); Stefano Bonaccini, President of the Emilia-Romagna Region (Italy) and of the Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR) & PLATFORMA; Rev Mpho Moruakgomo, former President of the Botswana Association of Local Authorities, Chairperson of the Commonwealth Local Government Forum (CLGF); Jan van Zanen, Mayor of The Hague (Netherlands) and President of Vereniging van Nederlandse Gemeenten
, Co-President of United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) and Fatimetou Abdel Malick, President of the Regional Council of Nouakchott (Mauritania), President of United Cities and Local Governments – Africa (UCLG-A). Following the Official Signing Ceremony, the local leaders had a meeting with Jutta Urpilainen, European Commissioner for International Partnerships.

The renewed partnership brings recognition to the contribution of local and regional governments for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and their commitment  in safeguarding the dreams and aspirations of their communities, for more inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable cities and territories.

Urban 20 Mayors Call on G20 to Foster a Sustainable Economic and Social Recovery for All

Urban 20 leaders outlined their vision for worldwide efforts to “recover together, recover stronger” from the pandemic and economic strife.

In the Urban 20 Summit communiqué, mayors and governors call for more investment in health systems and housing as a cornerstone to a global, inclusive and equitable recovery that boosts social protection and cohesion.

U20 cities urge G20 leaders and others to support equitable access to the job market and a renewable energy transition that puts equal access to sustainable mobility at its centre.

Mayors and governors representing some of the world’s largest economies today appealed to the Group of 20 to take concrete actions to accelerate a sustainable economic and social recovery for all by:

  • Investing in health and housing as a cornerstone to an economic and social recovery for all,

  • Fostering a sustainable energy transition and equal access to sustainable mobility, and

  • Providing education and training on the future of work to facilitate equitable access to the job market.

Get Ready for the Launch of GOLD VI Report: “Pathways to Urban andTerritorial Equality”
UCLG, in partnership with the Knowledge in Action for Urban Equality (KNOW) research consortium – led by the University College London and the International Institute for Environment and Development –, has analyzed how inequalities affect our cities and territories. And most importantly: what it is that local and regional governments, in alliance with local communities, are doing and can do about it.

Consequently, the GOLD VI Report will be launched on October 12th at the UCLG World Congress, in the session where the UCLG Pact for the Future will focus on equality and care as the central elements of a renewed social pact for protecting people, their livelihoods and aspirations – while a special session will also be dedicated to the Report on October 14th.

GOLD VI is more than a report: it is the testament of the municipalist movement’s vision and values and a commitment to the present and the future. And importantly, it is the culmination of a collaborative process that has brought together over a hundred representatives from LRGs, academia and civil society networks.

Towards Daejeon 2022: Cultural Rights Are Key to Shaping the Future
The Congress will host a special session, “The Future of Cultural Rights Shaping the New Sustainable Development”, organised by the UCLG Committee on Culture with the aim to convey how cities and cultural organisations around the world are leading the way to sustainable development with culture as a main component and from a rights-based approach.

The UCLG Committee on Culture has also been involved in the organization of other several activities and events in the context of the UNESCO Global Conference on Cultural Policies, Mondiacult which will take place in Mexico City from 28 to 30 September, 40 years after the first conference of this kind.

Additionally, on 27 September 2022, the Committee on Culture will organise, together with Mexico City, the Awarding Ceremony of the International Award UCLG – Mexico City – Culture 21 as well as a Dialogue on Cultural Rights in the Cities. Last but not least, together with the #Culture2030Goal campaign, and with the support of the Colegio de San Ildefonso and the City of Mexico, the Committee on Culture is organising a special event where a pioneering document will introduce a proposal for an explicit Goal dedicated to Culture in the post- 2030 sustainable development agenda and frameworks.
