Call for candidacies for the 2018 Cities and Climate Change Science Conference

Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)

An international conference on cities and climate change science will be held in 2018 to further develop the scientific understanding of climate change and cities, in support of the implementation of the Paris Agreement, the New Urban Agenda, and the Sustainable Development Goals. Cities interested in hosting this Conference are invited to apply by 31 January 2017.

At its session in Bangkok on 20 October 2016, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) announced plans to hold an international Cities and Climate Change Science Conference in early 2018.

Hosting the 2018 Cities and Climate Change Science Conference conference will be a huge opportunity to raise awareness of climate change and the role of local government in the achievement of the Paris Agenda.

The conference will bring together representatives from academia, research organizations and agencies, member states of the United Nations, local and regional governments and urban and climate change practitioners to stimulate scientific research on cities and climate change and provide inputs to upcoming IPCC reports, particularly the Special Report on Cities and Climate Change. The event aims to identify existing research and gaps and generate new data and research on climate impacts and solutions at local level.

The conference seeks to create synergies between the SDGs, Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction and Habitat III, and will facilitate engagement with Future Earth’s emerging research agenda on cities and sustainable urbanization, currently being built around a growing international network of over 50,000 researchers.

The conference is supported by the #CitiesIPCC group, a diverse coalition of urban and scientific organizations, including C40 Cities, Cities Alliance, ICLEI, Future Earth, SDSN, UCLG, UN-Habitat, UN Environment and WCRP.

#CitiesIPCC call all cities recognized for their climate leadership to submit their proposals to host the Conference by 31 January 2017.
