Located in the very heart of Montréal, Québec, it is one of the city’s 19 boroughs. About 144,000 residents live in the district, which is recognized for its quality of life, its green and stimulating living environments.
Over the past decade, in line with the power and authority accorded to the borough as well as with our priorities, the city has undertaken a broad program of reflection on the planning and development of the area so that citizens can benefit from a human-scale environment designed for living, working and playing in the district close to their homes. This vision, oriented towards active movement as it is, has involved among other things the adoption in June 2019 of Vision Vélo, an ambitious plan to make the entire area negotiable by bicycle and enable citizens to move about in a safe and user-friendly way to all locations that draw traffic, 365 days a year.
Organized over just three years, this is a complete mobility revolution. Already, according to a recent poll, the bicycle’s modal share has reached 21% in the Rosemont‒La Petite-Patrie area. Once the rollout of the network is completed, we hope to attain a 30% modal share.
This process undertaken by the borough, which is presented in detail in the attached document, is finding favor in other organizations and public administrations, whether local, national or international, that have chosen like yours to place active transportation at the heart of their thinking on mobility as a means of fostering economic revitalization and ensuring a transition to a more environmentally-friendly way of doing things.
As it heightens the appeal of cycling and other forms of soft mobility within its territory, Rosemont‒La Petite-Patrie takes its place in a global trend that has been under way for quite some time and that is proving itself more and more.
