UN establishes a new High‐Level Political Forum following Rio+20

High‐Level Political Forum following Rio+20

United Nations General Assembly agreed on July 2013, following Rio+20 Outcomes, to establish a new High‐Level Political Forum. UN Secretary‐General Ban Ki‐moon. “The Forum can provide the political leadership and action‐oriented recommendations we need to follow up on all the Rio recommendations and meet urgent global economic, social and environmental challenges.”

Paragraphs 13 to 16 of the resolution address Major Groups and other stakeholders’ engagement in the work of the HLPF. A good level of participation is envisaged but further mechanisms for consultation will be looked into especially for the meetings at the General Assembly.

The Forum will convene annually at the ministerial level under the auspices of the UN Economic and Social Council and, every four years, it will bring together Heads of State.
