Following the productive discussions at the Roundtable on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) & Urban Innovation held within the framework of the UCLG World Council in Paris, a new publication by the Urban Innovation Community entitled "Telling City Success Stories" is now available. The publication compiles the insightful ideas and visions that were shared at the roundtable as well as exploring tools, expertise and knowledge in urban innovation.
Urban innovation is a means for cities and local governments to improve the quality of life of its citizens. It lies at the heart of finding new ways to meet the social, economic, environmental and governance challenges that are faced by cities today.
On 5 December, 2015, the Urban Innovation Community organized a Roundtable on the SDGs & Urban Innovation: Telling City Success Stories, on the sidelines of the UCLG World Council Meetings, where the international community gathered to discuss, debate and formalize a consensus on the UN Framework on Climate Change (UNFCCC) during the annual Conference of Parties (COP) in Paris.
Gathering some 60 mayors, local officials, NGO representatives, and local development experts, the roundtable achieved its purpose of strengthening the role of the Community to enable them to provide new tools, expertise and knowledge on implementing and achieving the SDGs at the local level.
During the roundtable the Community officially announced the launch of the 2016 Guangzhou International Award for Urban Innovation and prepared the annual report of activities and outcomes in 2015 and the work plan for 2016. The Community plans to organize thematic seminars, workshops and training sessions, together with the Guangzhou Institute for Urban innovation, providing a sharing and learning platform for member cities and partners to promote decentralized and peer-to-peer learning.
