Three years after the signature of the Mexico Pact, and as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report is published, Cities and regions and their international networks came together at the World Mayors Summit on Climate Change on Saturday 28 September 2013 in Nantes, to reaffirm their commitments to scale up climate actions, urge engagement with the global level on climate change, and enhance access to finance.
Under the leadership of Ronan Dantec, French Senator and spokesperson of UCLG on climate change, 50 mayors from 30 countries adopted the Nantes Declaration of Mayors and Subnational Leaders on Climate Change.
The Global Taskforce of Local and Regional Governments on Post-2015 agenda and towards Habitat III meeting during UCLG World Congress in Rabat on 1st October welcomed this Declaration and reaffirmed its support to the Local Government Climate Roadmap, the advocacy process aiming at recognising, engaging and empowering local governments within the global climate regime.
The process towards the UN Climate Conference in 2015, to take place in Paris, France will be crucial for the engagement of local and regional authorities in the global climate regime, as Pascal Canfin, French Minister Delegate for Development, reaffirmed at the closing of UCLG World Congress, ensuring the audience of the full support of the French government in this process.
