The premier event for dialogue sharing on sustainable urban and economic development of African cities will take place in Johannesburg in 2015—bringing together 5,000 participants from across the globe.

A delegation of local and regional leaders of the Global Taskforce, facilitated by UCLG, which included over 40 elected representatives, met in New York on 15-18 September, on the occasion of the first Preparatory Committee meeting for the Habitat III Conference.

UCLG and its members are advocating for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that take local and regional priorities into account, in particular in the light of the rapid urbanization faced by many regions of the world.

While 72 % of the total EU population live in cities, towns and suburbs, this proportion is likely to reach more than 80% by 2050, giving rise to numerous social, environmental and democratic challenges.
