It is time to prioritise multi-stakeholder engagement and support to local governments in cities in crises.
By 2050, over 70% of the global population will live in urban areas. This escalating urbanisation trend is accompanied by an increasing prevalence and intensity of natural and man-made disasters in urban centres.
When crises in cities inevitably occur, local governments are the first line of response, often with wide ranging responsibilities but insufficient capacities to deal with them because they often remain excluded from profiling, planning, response and coordination processes.
This leads to duplication of efforts when it comes to anticipating, managing and reducing disaster risk, setting up. For this reason, international disaster response efforts should have to a local governance dimension addressing specific needs of local governments.
