Following the Statement issued in February, the membership of United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) continues to closely monitor the increasingly concerning events in Myanmar. In solidarity with the people of Myanmar, UCLG urges the respect of rule of law and the results of the democratic elections but in particular the protection of the lives of the population. UCLG hopes representatives of local authorities will be able to assume the legitimate mandate entrusted to them by the people of Myanmar.
We join the statements made by the United Nations and ASEAN in which deep concern on the military take-over of the country have been expressed.
We call on human rights to be protected and internet connections to be restored to allow communication.
We stand with the people of Myanmar and want to assure them that they are not forgotten, and hope for a swift restoration of freedoms, security and peace.
