The world organization United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) and the Barcelona Provincial Council, through the Observatory for Decentralized Cooperation and UCLG Learning, are launching the 4th edition online course "Localizing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Tools for Local Transformation" with new updated content and innovative good practices, adjusted to the latest times. Considering the new post-pandemic global reality of COVID-19, and the global challenges that are imposed at the local and regional level, the 2030 Agenda emerges, with a broad global consensus, as the frame of reference to guide the recovery process after the health crisis, as well as protect the environment, equality, justice and other universal rights, and thus achieve global sustainable development. Gender Equality at the heart of Agenda 2030: Launch of the special report on the Local and Regional Governments’ localization of SDG 5

SDG 5 is at the heart of Agenda 2030. Without it, the Goals cannot be realised. Eradicating structural inequalities (SDG 1 and 10), ensuring access to quality education (SDG 4), or guaranteeing dignified livelihoods (SDG 8) requires dismantling discriminatory gender norms and patriarchal values. Committing to sustainable, healthy cities (SDGs 3 and 11) requires recognising the essential role of care workers – predominantly women and local public service providers. The actions of indigenous women continue to be essential for safeguarding ecological systems (SDGs 6, 13 and 15). (+)

The 6th edition of the Global Taskforce’s report to the HLPF 2022, Towards the Localization of the SDGs, is out now! Over the past two years, local and regional governments (LRGs) have positioned themselves as frontline responders to the complex and interconnected crises that our societies are facing. The role that LRGs play in securing universal access to local public services has come through as simply essential to address the current crisis and to support a just recovery. (+)

Three new reports on the localization of the 2030 Agenda will be launched during the upcoming High Level Political Forum (HLPF) Local and Regional Governments’ Day on Monday, 11 July. They will offer updates on local governments’ role in achieving the SDGs, promoting gender equality and contributing to a just and sustainable recovery (+)
In 2022-2023, the 5th edition of the International Award UCLG – Mexico City – Culture 21 recognises cities and individuals for their relentless efforts and dedication towards the guarantee of cultural rights in times of crisis and their outstanding work on the relation between culture, sustainable development and caring societies.
