This COP, coming after the Paris agreement entry into force (on 4 November 2016) is placed under the moto of action and will aim at looking at initiatives and partnerships undertaken by States and Stakeholders in order to achieve the priorities of The Paris Agreement.

Our activity in Marrakech will showcase the enormous potential of our constituency for implementing practical solutions that can effectively mitigate and adapt to climate change. One of the unique features of COP22 is the Global Climate Action, developed by the COP Champions, H.E. Hakima El Haite and H.E. Laurence Tibuana, in collaboration with the UNFCCC Secretariat, pursuant to the mandate delivered by the Paris agreement decision at COP21 and the consultations with Parties and stakeholders over the past months.

The Global Climate Action consists of 8 themes, each facilitated by relevant expert partners to be discussed in a day long sessions focusing on showcasing initiatives and dialogues on next steps throughout the 2 weeks, outcomes of which will be discussed through a High Level day-long event on 17th.

As part of this process, the LGMA together with the Ministry of Interior of Morocco are facilitating the Resilience Workstream of the Cities and Human Settlements Theme on 10 November.

The Dialogue on resilience in Cities and Human Settlements includes two policy dialogues: on ensuring synergy between the Paris Agreement, the New Urban Agenda and Sendai Framework policies; and on financing urban resilience through endogenous, subnational, national, regional, global and private resources.

On 14th Monday at the beginning of the second week, a-day long Climate Summit for Local and Regional Leaders will be held in the Palmeraie Conference Center and the Palmeraie Gold Palace.

The Association of Moroccan Regions (ARM) and the Moroccan Association of Presidents of Local Councils (AMPCC), in partnership with major international networks of local, metropolitan and regional governments including UCLG Africa, will organize the Climate Summit for Local and Regional Leaders on 14 November at the Congress Palace of Marrakesh.

The theme of the summit is “Financing the Sustainable Transition of Territories”. This Summit will showcase local and regional leaders’ commitment and willingness to support the Global Climate Action Agenda’s implementation, to strengthen convergences and alliances, and develop the necessary partnerships in order to accelerate local action for climate.

UCLG will count with the representation of Parks Tau, UCLG President, in the first session of the day.

Throughout the two weeks, UNFCCC bodies will also convene a number of events with stakeholders, including LGMA constituency and numerous LGMA interventions will be delivered at various session.
