The 22nd Session of the Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP22) will be held in Marrakech from 7 to 18 November 2016. This COP, coming after the Paris agreement entry into force (on 4 November 2016) is placed under the moto of action and will aim at looking at initiatives and partnerships undertaken by States and Stakeholders in order to achieve the priorities of The Paris Agreement.
Our activity in Marrakech will showcase the enormous potential of our constituency for implementing practical solutions that can effectively mitigate and adapt to climate change. Local and regional government delegations will follow daily discussions. The Local Governments and Municipal Authorities Major Group (LGMA) is actively engaged in this COP, taking part in the following events.

1- THE GLOBAL CLIMATE ACTION
One of the unique features of COP22 is the Global Climate Action, developed by the COP Champions, H.E. Hakima El Haite and H.E. Laurence Tibuana, in collaboration with the UNFCCC Secretariat, pursuant to the mandate delivered by the Paris agreement decision at COP21 and the consultations with Parties and stakeholders over the past months.
The Global Climate Action consists of 8 themes, each facilitated by relevant expert partners to be discussed in a day long sessions focusing on showcasing initiatives and dialogues on next steps throughout the 2 weeks, outcomes of which will be discussed through a High Level day-long event on 17th.
As part of this process, the LGMA together with the Ministry of Interior of Morocco are facilitating the Resilience Workstream of the Cities and Human Settlements Theme on 10 November.
The Dialogue on resilience in Cities and Human Settlements includes two policy dialogues: on ensuring synergy between the Paris Agreement, the New Urban Agenda and Sendai Framework policies; and on financing urban resilience through endogenous, subnational, national, regional, global and private resources.
2- CLIMATE SUMIT FOR LOCAL AND REGIONAL LEADERS
On 14th Monday at the beginning of the second week, a-day long Climate Summit for Local and Regional Leaders will be held in the Palmeraie Conference Center and the Palmeraie Gold Palace.
The Association of Moroccan Regions (ARM) and the Moroccan Association of Presidents of Local Councils (AMPCC), in partnership with major international networks of local, metropolitan and regional governments including UCLG Africa, will organize the Climate Summit for Local and Regional Leaders on 14 November at the Congress Palace of Marrakesh.
The theme of the summit is “Financing the Sustainable Transition of Territories”. This Summit will showcase local and regional leaders’ commitment and willingness to support the Global Climate Action Agenda’s implementation, to strengthen convergences and alliances, and develop the necessary partnerships in order to accelerate local action for climate.
UCLG will count with the representation of Parks Tau, UCLG President, in the first session of the day.

3- ACTIVITIES OF UCLG AND PARTNERS IN THE BLUE ZONE (accreditation required)
Throughout the two weeks, UNFCCC bodies will also convene a number of events with stakeholders, including LGMA constituency and numerous LGMA interventions will be delivered at various session.

- Thursday 17, November |16.45-18.15 | Room Pacific (Blue Zone) | Financing sustainable local action for climate: what joint agenda for Non-party stakeholders: This side event is organized by UCLG on behalf of the Global Taskforce, together with the Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR) and I4CE.

4- HIGH LEVEL DIALOGUE
The outcomes of the 10 will be presented on the 17 November together with the Transport Theme at the "Sustainable Infrastructure" session in the morning. In the afternoon, there will be numerous sessions which number and themes are yet to be defined.
5- COP22 LOW EMISSIONS SOLUTIONS CONFERENCE LESC
This three-day Low-Emissions Solutions Conference (LESC) is aimed at problem solving, brainstorming, and global co-creation to inform nations about the latest technology developments.
This is the first of its kind in a COP meeting. The sessions will be held at the COP22 Blue Zone on 14-16 November. On 15 November Tuesday morning, two sessions will focus on Local Climate Action and Smart Cities. All information about the conference is available at www.lowemissions.solutions/
6- CITIES AND REGIONS PAVILION
At the COP22 Green Zone, a special Cities and Regions Pavilion will take place which will also be the place to convene daily LGMA briefings together with a number of LGMA led events.
