LocalizingSDGs - 14/07/2020
The fourth Towards the localization of the SDGs report was presented in the occasion of the Local and Regional Governments’ Day in the framework of the 2020 High-Level Political Forum. The report, facilitated by UCLG on behalf of the Global Taskforce of Local and Regional Governments, builds on the previous publications’ knowledge on the state of localization, and has adapted to the current context by emphasizing the direct contribution of local and regional governments both to the SDGs and to the COVID-19 crisis.

In the framework of the High-Level Political Forum UCLG, together with UN-Habitat, presented the first volume of the Guidelines for VLRs. The Guidelines are aimed at showcasing the value of subnational reporting as much more than a part of the reporting process. Throughout the session, participants highlighted the power of Voluntary Local Reviews as an element that can contribute towards multilevel governance and transformation.

The 2020 High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) will take place virtually from Tuesday 7 July, to Thursday, 16 July 2020. Under the auspices of ECOSOC, this year’s theme is “Accelerated action and transformative pathways: realizing the decade of action and delivery for sustainable development”.

The pandemic has shown, at a time when people have stopped working, stopped moving, and when borders have been closed by necessity, the weaknesses of our production and food systems. Large parts of the population have seen their access to quality food worsened. The transformation of the food system, and the role of territories in it, is taking hold in the urban era and even more so in the pandemic.

With more than half of the world’s population under lockdown conditions by early April, COVID-19 has cast a harsh light on inequalities and social distress in urban environments across the globe. Under lockdown conditions, there has been a spike in domestic violence, in civil unrest, and other crimes as movement restrictions, loss of income, isolation, high levels of stress and anxiety create tensions and strains at home.
